SCIENTIFIC NAME: Yucca rostrata 'Sapphire Skies'
COMMON NAME: Sapphire Skies Beaked Blue Yucca
GARDEN SIZE: 8-10 ft. tall and 3-4 ft. wide in 10 years; 12-15 ft. tall with age in ideal conditions
GROWTH RATE: Moderate
USDA ZONE: 5 to 11
EXPOSURE: Full Sun
WATER & SOIL: These desert-adapted species require gritty, sandy, or rocky soils with excellent drainage. They prefer dry conditions and minimal watering once established, as excess moisture—especially in winter—can lead to rot.
HABIT (FORM): Upright, single trunk with dense, symmetrical crown
FOLIAGE: Evergreen, narrow, stiff baby blue leaves shorter than typical species
FLOWERS: Showy white spike blooms at full maturity, in summer
PLANT ORIGIN: Found in Texas and northern Mexico
WILDLIFE SUPPORT: May provide some nesting sites and shelter for birds and small mammals, but does not serve as much of a host for local insects and wildlife. May provide food for insects in the spring.
FERTILIZING: These species thrive in lean soils and rarely need supplemental fertilizer. If desired, use a light application of cactus or succulent fertilizer in spring to encourage healthy growth.
PRUNING: Very low-maintenance. Remove spent flower stalks and any dead or damaged leaves as needed, typically in late winter or early spring. Trunk-forming species may have dead leaves trimmed for a cleaner appearance.
TOXICITY: Generally considered mildy to moderately toxic to humans and pets.
USES: Excellent as architectural accents, borders, or container specimens. Ideal for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and pollinator-friendly landscapes, with striking blooms and bold evergreen foliage that provide year-round interest.
