The botanical name "Achillea" comes from the use of this plant at Troy to staunch soldiers' wounds. Today, many varieties of yarrow exist, and are used in both medicinal and ornamental gardens. Its native range is widely distributed throughout the United States, in prairie lands.

When grown in ornamental gardens, Achillea millefolium has a pleasing scent, comes in a variety of colors, and is lovely in cut flower arrangements. It is also a magnet for pollinators.
