The Stanley Cup. It is the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise. The trophy is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, then–Governor General of Canada, who donated it as an award to Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club. The first Cup was awarded in 1893 to Montreal Hockey Club. Professional teams first became eligible to challenge for the Stanley Cup in 1906. In 1915, the two professional ice hockey organizations, the National Hockey Association and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, reached an agreement in which their respective champions would face each other annually for the Stanley Cup. After a series of league mergers and transitions, it was established as the ceremonial championship trophy of the NHL in 1926 and then the official NHL championship prize in 1947.
Nashville is the envy of sports pundits and enthusiasts across North America. The place to be is Music City…currently better known to the hockey faithful as Smashville. I don’t believe it is possible to live here and not get caught up in the frenzy that the playoffs have conjured. If Nashville is successful tonight and gets a win at Pittsburgh, I think it is safe to say this town will come completely un-glued! While I have not ventured downtown during the finals, the views on television and the glowing accolades by sportscasters regarding the exuberance of the tens of thousands of fans filling the streets and other public areas is awe inspiring!
Regardless of the outcome, we should all be extremely proud of our hockey team and of our citizens for demonstrating what real fan appreciation looks like! We’re no exception; it is difficult to concentrate on work due to the excitement…but we are trying! As a salute to our fair city and to say “Thanks” for being a loyal BatesRewards member, wear any piece of Predators attire and get 17% off all EarthMix® products, bagged or bulk!
