Our Partnership with Monrovia
A business relationship that spans more than four decades
My earliest recollection of
Monrovia Nursery is from about 1965 when we first received plants from this
nursery, all the way across the country. They were curious plants to me. They
didn’t look like other plants I had seen. They looked so incredibly healthy and
uniform that even a nine-year-old kid couldn’t help but notice. These plants
also had something other plants I’d seen didn’t have; a tag. A yellow tag with
a quaint little man wearing a cap and a pipe sticking out of his mouth with a
large “MN” inside his ovoid sphere of a body…was curious to me. The little tag
also contained two words: Distinctively Better. And that wasn’t all, these
plants were in containers. In 1965 this was a real novelty, particularly in Tennessee, home of the
self-proclaimed nursery capital of the nation, McMinnville.
Since their founding by Harry E. Rosedale in 1926, the name Monrovia has been synonymous with
Distinctively Better® plants.
Harry Rosedale was one of the early pioneers to grow plants in containers. It
was a revolutionary idea, but he saw that plants would endure less trauma and
transplant better if they remained in their containers until they were ready to
be planted in the landscape.
The challenge was to create an environment of soil that allowed the plants to
has continually improved their soil mixes, developed better irrigation systems
and led the way with a series of horticultural breakthroughs resulting in
extraordinarily healthy plants that will not only survive, but thrive, in home
grows more than 2,300 varieties and 22 million plants annually; each one is
nurtured by hand with care to assure it is truly Distinctively Better.
