It would appear that March
begins on an upbeat note. I am never sure when it comes to weather lore. There
is a well-worn reference, but I never know what its correct use is. March
either” comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion” or visa-versa. Exactly
what constitutes lamb or lion weather anyway? Yesterday was rainy and somewhat
windy; I guess that could be lion weather. On the other hand, the temperatures
were in the 70’s most of the day; that is about as lamb as it gets. Oh wait a
minute, I almost forgot, it was leap day, February 29th, not March 1st. Today
is March 1st. Never-mind! Today looks to be beautiful…is that good news or bad?
Mythical meteorological prognostications aside, we are staring down the barrel of spring, ready or not. That does not mean we will not have a few detours along the way. It does mean there are things in the garden that need tendin’ to.
The early arriving temperatures mean it is time to apply pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn to prevent grassy weeds. Crabgrass is almost impossible to eradicate post-emergence (after it has germinated). It is far easier to prevent. You should consider using a grassy weed preventer with the active ingredient Dimension®. Dimension® is far more effective than other types of grassy weed preventers. We have it available in Hi-Yield brand in bag sizes that will treat 5000 s/f up to 15,000 s/f. Remember: An ounce of prevention…
It is indeed a great time for planting. While we do not have everything in stock we will have, our selection is already quite diverse. We have received full truck shipments of Monrovia/Oregon plants as well as shade and fruit trees. I can’t think of a better way to begin your first Saturday in March than coming out for a visit. A reminder of our current hours: Monday through Saturday 8am to 4:30pm. We’re closed on Sundays until March 18th.
We are looking forward to seeing you,
