I guess presence of football should tip me off. Once again, here we stand (or sit as the case may be) looking at the last full week of August. Usually I’m ready to get August over with, but this year, August has been rather pleasant. So it is with mixed emotions that I (and we) prepare to bid farewell to the eighth month of 2012. I can almost hear “Auld Lang Syne” playing in the background…or is that “Rocky Top”? My hearing is not what it used to be.

It matters little if you’re a football fan or not. The fact that football rules in the South cannot be ignored. If you’re a recent transplant to middle Tennessee; be advised: Football is not just a game in the South; it is what many live for. I know; that used to be me. It is not that I no longer enjoy football; I do. I have simply arrived to the place in life where I no longer plan my entire life around it. Believe me; it has taken years of therapy. Football fans have a huge emotional investment in their sport. Other sports have their fanatics as well; but no other sport can have 350-pound men weeping at the outcome…win or lose. You have to love that.

For all you frustrated football fans, remember this: Your team is probably still undefeated. Start gardening now before the gridiron gremlins get you! Since you’re a BatesRewards member come on out and get your championship garden enhanced. All trees and perennials are 40% off through August 29th!

Plant one for the Gipper,
