David Bates' Bio

As a third generation horticulturist, David Bates shares a lifetime of experience working in the nursery industry.  The second of five children, David grew up landscape contracting with his Dad and brothers.  During those years, he learned from his Grandmother and Father the many in’s and out’s of plant life and culture. It was during these early, formative years that the loathing of work turned into the love of plants.  These years provided the knowledge of how to solve plant pest, disease, and growth problems through hands-on experience.

David is the President of Bates Nursery & Garden Center, Inc.  After 32331__108__192__fill__100.jpgmore than 40 years personally, and 81 years by the Bates family, Bates Nursery & Garden Center remains a local industry leader by providing a diverse selection of plant material to home owners and landscape professionals alike.

David is a past-President (2002-2003) of the Tennessee Nursery & Landscape Association. He also served on the board of the TNLA, for six years.  More information about the TNLA is available at:  http://www.tnla.com

Since 1998, David has co-hosted, “The At Home Show with Josh Cary and David Bates”.  Winners of the “Air Award” in 2006 for best specialty program, Josh and David weave their experience and humor for two hours each Saturday morning from 7-9am on 99.7 FM, WTN in Nashville, Tennessee.

David continues to be used as a local media “Lawn & Garden Expert”.  For 15 years, he has been a recurring guest on “Talk of the Town” a long-running mid-day television show on WTVF.  He is also a frequent resource of other local television stations during spring/fall freezes and of other weather occurrences involving plants during otherwise slow news times.

Always in the outdoors, David (when not at work) is often working on the landscaping at his own home. Additionally, he also attempts to be accused of being a runner. He is a technology enthusiast, a near technophile, always interested in any new gadget.

Being native Nashvillians, David & his wife Renée reside in a historic west Nashville neighborhood.
